Rivers: APC Unhappy With Suspended Labour Protest

Publish date: 2024-07-09

Governor Nysome Wike of Rivers State has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other opposition parties are disappointed over the suspended labour protest.

He stated this to newsmen after inspecting the Rebisi, GRA, Rumuola and Rumuogba flyover projects and ongoing road construction work in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas of the State.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had stopped its planned protest in Rivers State following an agreement with the State Government.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim had said officials of NLC led by its National President, Ayuba Wabba, reached the agreement in a meeting at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

Wabba reportedly read the agreement on the implementation of the new national minimum wage and consequential adjustments saying the parties to the dispute agreed to sign it.

He said the state NLC secretariat sealed for correction of structural defects would be unsealed while the government continued with the work.

Speaking, Wike expressed satisfaction that all contending issues with the organised labour were amicably resolved.

He said: “All the issues were mere misunderstandings and now that they have understood our position, they said they have to suspend the protest.

“So for me, I am happy that there was nothing like conflict at the end of the day. Those of them who were thinking that Rivers State will be shut down were highly disappointed.”

The governor said he will not disappoint Rivers people, noting that through passion and commitment he has judiciously utilized scarce resources for the development of the State.
