Historical Context
One of the biggest battles of the New Zealand wars fought between the indigenous Māori and British forces.
The British, led by General Cameron, attacked Gate Pā (Pukehinahina), unaware of extensive trench fortifications around it engineered by Pene Taka Tuaia.
The British attack was repulsed and the result was a famous Māori victory.
