Drivers of ill-fated Modern Coast buses were long-term friends from Kakamega county

- They were long-term friends and met very often as their buses plied the same routes
Details have emerged indicating the two drivers of ill-fated Modern Coast buses were long-term friends and both hailed from neighboring villages in Kakamega county.
Locals in the villages of Mukabakaba and Lutali both in Kakamega North sub-county are mourning Moses Wanjala, 49, and 57-year-old Japhfred Lucas respectively.

According to the family, Wanjala had worked for the company for a year, mainly plying the Mombasa-Nairobi-Homa Bay route.
On the day of the accident, he was heading to Mombasa when his bus collided with Lukasile’s.
The two drivers knew each other very well and their paths often crossed as they headed to different destinations.

The two had a long experience on the road before the early morning crash in Kiongwani, Makueni county, that claimed seven lives and injured more than 60.
The families said they expected the company to support them financially but no help has been offered up to now.

“We expected the Modern Coast company management to stand with the families following the tragedy but that has not happened,” Wanjala’s aunt, Grace Isomi, said.The company whose license has since been withdrawn was subjected to thorough inspection by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
As earlier reported by TUKO.co.ke , over 40 buses out of 88 have undergone inspection and the driver and conductors are currently undergoing a road safety sensitization training by NTSA.
